- W2766923653 abstract "Gérard Férey, a leader in the field of solid-state chemistry and a pioneer of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), passed away on August 19, 2017 in Paris. Férey developed both open-framework templated metal fluorophosphates (the ULM-n series) and a series of topical porous MOFs (the MIL-n series). He also created the automated assembly of secondary building units methodology to predict the structure of new porous solids. Gérard Férey, a leader in the field of solid-state chemistry and a pioneer of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), passed away on August 19, 2017 in Paris. Férey was born in 1941 in Bréhal, Normandy. In 1960, he started working as a primary school teacher, and in 1963, he commenced his studies at the Université de Caen. He completed his doctoral thesis in 1968, and subsequently was made “assistant” at the Institut Universitaire de Technologie du Mans (IUT), where he was one of the founders of the chemistry department. In 1977, he completed his habilitation in the field of metal fluorides at the Université Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris, and in 1981, he was made professor in Le Mans. During his time in Le Mans, Férey worked on fluorine-based inorganic materials. One of his first breakthroughs dealt with the study of magnetically frustrated dense iron fluorides. Férey and his colleague Jean Pannetier were among the first to rely on neutron diffraction to analyze the magnetic structures of fluoride materials. During this period, Férey developed his exceptional talent for analyzing the structure of crystalline solids. From 1988–1992, Férey was Deputy Director of the CNRS Institut de Chimie. He also launched a major theme in the study of ordered porous solids by designing the first open-framework templated metal fluorophosphates denoted ULM-n (ULM stands for Université Le Mans). He defined indicators that predict whether the porous framework will or will not collapse upon the removal of the template. This methodology was developed through strong collaborations with NMR expert Francis Taulelle and with theorists, and led to the well-known secondary building unit (SBU) synthetic approach that relies on the use of preformed building blocks to produce new porous architectures. This technique was further strengthened through the use of molecular-modeling techniques to result in the automated assembly of SBU (AASBU) methodology in order to predict the structure of new porous solids, instead of relying on the “black box” hydrothermal technique. In 1996, Gérard Férey left Le Mans to create the Institut Lavoisier at the Université de Versailles. He became progressively more engaged in the new emerging domain of porous solids, that is, MOFs. Together with Profs. Susumu Kitagawa (Kyoto), Omar Yaghi (Berkeley), and Richard Robson (Melbourne), he is one of the greatest contributors to the success of this fascinating class of hybrid porous solids. His achievements are mainly in the rational design of a series of topical porous MOFs, the well-known MIL-n (MIL stands for Materials Institut Lavoisier). Férey and his team produced more than 150 architectures. Among the most attractive for practical purposes are 1) the highly flexible MOFs MIL-53 or MIL-88, which are able to swell or breathe reversibly up to 230 % in unit-cell volume; 2) the mesoporous MIL-100 or MIL-101 with giant pores and accessible metal sites; and 3) the first photoactive highly porous Ti-based MOF MIL-125. Férey paid particular attention throughout to the reproducibility of the synthetic conditions, which, combined with their robustness, make MIL-n probably the most interesting series of MOFs from an application point of view. Férey received an impressive number of awards, including the Gay-Lussac Humboldt Prize in 2006, and France's highest scientific honor, the CNRS Gold Medal in 2010. He also received the Ordre National de la Légion d'honneur, France's highest civil award. His legacy and his commitment to the community, not only of those interested in porous solids but also in chemistry in general, will be appreciated by researchers for many years to come. Férey was committed to the development of young researchers; many of his former students or younger colleagues are now group leaders in academia or industry. He was also involved with many academic and governmental organizations both in Europe and worldwide. Furthermore, he inspired young people by giving lectures about the beauty of chemistry in French elementary schools." @default.
