- W2767086989 abstract "SESSION TITLE: Respiratory Care SESSION TYPE: Original Investigation Poster PRESENTED ON: Wednesday, November 1, 2017 at 01:30 PM - 02:30 PM PURPOSE: Oxygen concentrators are common in facilities where bulk oxygen is not available. The typical concentrator has a maximum flowrate of 5 Lpm. However, some oxygen interaces may require flows higher than 5 Lpm. The purpose of this study was to determine what effect combining the flows from two concentrators would have on output (total) flow (i.e. is combining the flows a safe practice). METHODS: We acquired two typical 5 Lpm concentrators (Invacare Perfecto 2) and measured the flowrate and FiO2 from each device at each whole number flow setting using a calibrated concentrator test station (US LX System). Data were analyzed via computer using the Concentrator Data Acquisition System. At each setting, the indicator ball was placed so that the center of the ball was dissected by the indicator line. Once the control flows and FiO2s were recorded, we banked the two concentrators together and measured the output flows at the same flow settings. RESULTS: Combined Flows Measured Flow Measured FiO2 1+1 2 94% 2+2 4 94% 3+3 6 94% 4+4 8 95% 5+5 9 95% [Note: Flows and FiO2s were rounded to the nearest whole number. The measured values were within 0.5% of the control values for FiO2.] CONCLUSIONS: As can be seen from the data, there is virtually no change in flowrate or FiO2 when the flows were combined. We conclude that combining the flows from two 5 Lpm concentrators is an acceptable clinical practice. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: As stated above, there may be situations where it is necessary to generate flows greater than 5 Lpm. Rather than using more expensive bulk oxygen systems (e.g. cylinders), it is clinically efficacious to combine the flows from two oxygen concentrators. This may be of great benefit especially to home care providers. DISCLOSURE: The following authors have nothing to disclose: William French No Product/Research Disclosure Information" @default.
