- W2767163087 abstract "Preeclampsia, a common condition affecting 3–10% of all pregnancies, is the leading cause of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality (Powe et al., 2011). Both animal and human studies suggest the possibility of a link between preeclampsia and AD; however, no formal systematic review has been previously conducted to ascertain evidence-based consensus as to whether a history of preeclampsia may increase a woman's risk for later AD. We set out to conduct a systematic review following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Out of 119 studies identified in PubMed and Embase with formal keyword “(Pre-eclampsia OR Preeclampsia) AND Alzheimer*”, 2 met our inclusion criteria including one retrospective cohort study and one case-control study. A meta-analysis was utilized to generate the pooled odds ratio (OR) using Stata version 14.2. The results from the studies were inconsistent; the retrospective cohort study found that there is a 4.02 increased risk (95% CI: 1.08–14.99) of AD among women who had versus did not have preeclampsia, but the case-control study showed that there is no significant difference between women with and without AD and having had a preeclamptic pregnancy (4/104 [3.8%] versus 4/129 [3.1%], P=1.00). Pooled OR from the observational studies depicts an increased odds of AD (OR: 3.26, 95% CI: 1.78–5.96) among women with a history of preeclampsia, albeit not statistically significant (P=0.12)." @default.
