- W2767359734 abstract "Methamphetamine-related death has been a neglected area of public health research. The true impact of methamphetamine-related mortality, across a range of different manners of death, has thus been underestimated. We appreciate very much the insights on our work 1 by McKetin 2 and Kuo & Chen 3. Both commentaries note, rightly, that methamphetamine-related death has been a neglected area of public health research. McKetin, in particular, notes that methamphetamine-related deaths have characteristics that distinguish them from drugs such as the opioids, and that these extend far beyond toxicity. In particular, the role of cardiovascular disease cannot be overstated. The fact that methamphetamine causes heart disease is a fact that must be borne in mind when documenting the mortality and morbidity associated with the drug. We must not focus solely upon overdose, as significant as that is. The parallel to tobacco-related death made by McKetin is well made in this regard. The high levels of activation seen in methamphetamine users are also played out in violent suicides and high levels of risk-taking in fatal accidents. McKetin is absolutely correct in stating that the fact that so little research has been conducted in this field has meant that we lack attributable risk information and, thus, underestimate the burden of disease. It is our hope that this work will contribute to a more complete picture of the risks. Kuo & Chen call for more longitudinal cohort studies of methamphetamine users. We concur entirely. Indeed, the authors who have written these commentaries are among the few to have conducted such research 4, 5. A great deal more such work is necessary to answer questions on the natural history of methamphetamine dependence. To date, methamphetamine-related death has been a neglected research area, but it is one that may provide a wealth of data for preventing future deaths. None." @default.
