- W2768606050 abstract "Because engineering is the application of the sciences to improve the human condition, one should consider how much and what types of enhancements are ethical. Thus, the chapter addresses one overriding bioethics question that puts forward the ethical credibility of human enhancement. Active enhancement is encouraged by the engineering profession. But enhancement of the human species is far from a morally neutral enterprise. Each engineer changes the future of the client and, in turn, incrementally changes the future. To understand bioethics from an engineering perspective, one should briefly distinguish engineering thinking from that of other scientific disciplines. In dealing with these paradigms through time, attempts to classify, separate, and define the ideas of basic and applied research have seemingly led to some irresolution. This belief that advances in science, including biomedicine, are made applicable through a dynamic flow from science to technology is widely accepted among research and development managers. The first step in this process is basic research, which charts the course for practical application, eliminates dead ends, and enables the applied scientist and engineer to reach their goal quickly, and economically. Then applied research involves the elaboration and the application of the known." @default.
