- W2768763765 abstract "In oncology, precision medicine has been advocated to individualise therapy, to achieve the maximum possible effect from new antineoplastic drugs. 1 Schork NJ Time for one-person trials. Nature. 2015; 320: 609-611 Crossref Scopus (689) Google Scholar In antimicrobial therapy, precision medicine could be defined as giving the right antibiotic, to the right patient, at the right time, at the right dosage, and for the right duration. A net result of these efforts should be a reduction and rationalisation in the use of antibiotics, with consequent reduced antibiotic selective pressure on the human microbiota and a possible decrease in rates of antimicrobial resistance. Both microbiota alterations and increased resistance are worrisome in patients with cancer. Mortality from infections due to resistant pathogens in patients with neutropenia is rising, with recent data showing rates approaching those of the 1960s, when mortality in patients with neutropenia and bacteraemia was as high as 90%. 2 Averbuch D Tridello G Hoek J et al. This clinical approach reduces unnecessary exposure to antimicrobials and it is safe. Full-Text PDF" @default.
