- W2768889400 abstract "Studies of suicide have consistently found that men of all ages are at higher risk for suicide than are women. Thus, therapists working with depressed men must be prepared to assess and manage suicide risk. A number of conditions greatly increase the risk of suicide in men. Two particularly dangerous conditions are comorbid alcoholism or substance abuse and antisocial personality. Alcohol and other substance abuse most likely disinhibits the containment and expression of aggressive, suicidal, or homicidal impulses in men. Thus, in men who are also suffering from major depression, a potentially lethal combination is created. The impulsive and dangerous behavior patterns associated with antisocial personality often contribute to the potential for injury or violence. Taken together with an underlying mood disorder that might cause suicidal feelings, factors such as these create a dangerous, although common, situation for depressed men. Guidelines for assessment of suicide risk assist the clinician in navigating this challenging aspect of treatment of depressed men. Recommendations for managing suicide risk lend support and offer guidance for the clinician, who must collaborate with the suicidal patient to insure his safety and survival. In addition to increasing knowledge about guidelines for assessing and managing suicidal risk in men, the clinician must be aware of his or her own countertransference reactions. Working with depressed and suicidal men is difficult, challenging, yet frequently quite rewarding for the therapist who is willing to take on such a task and hang in there with her or his male patient." @default.
