- W2769481874 abstract "The goal of workload modeling is to predict acomputer’s workload well enough to design itcorrectly. A poor model will lead to degradedperformance and user satisfaction. Analyzing logsfrom multiple real parallel computers uncoversseveral statistical features – locality of sampling, daily cycles, weekly cycles, self similarity andflurries – that are missing from current workloadmodels. Their practical importance is demonstratedby two new kinds of scheduling algorithms – adaptivescheduling and shortest job backfill firstscheduling – which achieve an average 10% bottom-line performance gain and 35% stability gain on theproduction workloads. The second part of this book presents a user basedworkload model. It identifies four stable user typesand five stable session types. It then deduces modelparameters, the distributions of the arrival andactivity patterns for both users and sessions, theirdependencies and temporal structure. The methodologyand statistical toolset is explained to make iteasier to reuse in other domains. The insights and practical advice provided will beof use to anyone building or operating a large-scaleparallel computer." @default.
