- W2769804135 abstract "The increasing ageing population in Australia means that older adults need to remain in the workforce longer. Hence, it is important to identify issues for older workers such as stereotype threat in the workplace. Stereotype threat is the possibility of confirming a negative stereotype about a group to which one belongs. Two consequences arise from stereotype threat: performance decrements or disengagement. This study investigated the disengagement consequences of stereotype threat in the workplace. Firstly, the study investigated age, where older employees were expected to experience lower job satisfaction and lower job engagement due to stereotype threat. Secondly, the study explored whether work centrality was a reason for why some employees experience stereotype threat and others do not, such that employees with high work centrality would experience worse outcomes from stereotype threat experiences. The study utilised multilevel modelling in order to analyse longitudinal data. As such, participants (N = 311) completed a baseline survey followed by five weekly surveys. The results showed that weekly stereotype threat did not affect weekly job satisfaction or job engagement. However, it was found that older adults who experience more stereotype threat events have lower job satisfaction. This pattern of results was not found for job engagement. Employees who perceived work as more central to their lives were not found to be more susceptible to the negative consequences of stereotype threat. These findings contribute to the understanding of stereotype threat, specifically the disengagement consequences in the workplace, by showing that job satisfaction may be hindered by experiences of stereotype threat in a given week. Furthermore, it supports the cross-sectional notion in literature that stereotype threat has adverse work outcomes." @default.
