- W2770192783 abstract "April G. Shelford's book centers on the figure of Pierre-Daniel Huet, member of the Académie Française and bishop of Avranches. Shelford uses her account of Huet's life and works to explore the workings of the “old” Republic of Letters, which emerged out of the Renaissance, and the process by which it was transformed into its “new” Enlightenment form at the end of the seventeenth century. Shelford's rich and fascinating study (which is illustrated with a number of innovative diagrams) draws heavily on Huet's correspondence with various scholars of the day, as well as on his own works. She offers a more comprehensive picture of Huet than has previously been available, by integrating the neo-Latin poet with the Biblical scholar, scientist, and novelist. In order to achieve this, she adopts a thematic rather than a purely chronological structure. In the first chapter Shelford deals with Huet's education and his Jesuit links. In particular, his relationship with his teacher Pierre Mambrun is explored. Chapter two considers his role as a leading neo-Latin poet and his membership of the Academia Briosa. The third chapter centers on Huet's involvement with women. Shelford sets out a useful contrast between the “Republic of Letters” and the “Empire of Women” as a means of exploring the similarities and differences between these two arenas. She also stresses the role that salons played in bringing about the transformation of the Republic of Letters. Chapter four focuses on Huet the scientist and considers his gradual shift from the neo-Aristotelianism of the Jesuits, via a brief flirtation with Cartesianism, to his late position as a Gassendist-Epicurean. Here, too, Shelford discusses Huet's links to André Graindorge and their creation of the Caënnais scientific society. In her last chapter, Shelford examines Huet's attempts to defend the old Republic of Letters in the late seventeenth century and explores the complexity of his position within those debates. In doing so she helps to illuminate the origins of the battle of the ancients and moderns and the means by which the Republic of Letters was gradually transformed. In her conclusion, Shelford takes the story on to consider what Huet would have made of the culture and morals of the Enlightenment." @default.
