VIRGO DEI GENITRIX: A STUDY OF ITS SETTINGS IN T H E NOTRE D A M E REPERTOIRE* Peter M a d d o x , J o n a t h a n C o u c h m a n , and R i c h a r d Nemeth The rich repertoire o f sacred polyphonic compositions left by the Parisian masters at the Cathedral o f Notre Dame and their disciples is the most significant musical remnant o f the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. The music itself represents an amazing advance in attitudes and compositional creativity over earlier medieval polyphony. The notational system, r h y t h m i c diversity, textual innovations, and liturgical context o f these vertical tropes on pre-existent chant melodies have been both widely discussed and vigorously disputed among musicologists. Before and d u r i n g the Notre Dame period, the liturgical performance o f any chant mandated the singing o f the entire chant melody despite any changes or accretions to the polyphony. Most o f the Notre Dame source material, however, gives only the polyphonic settings which use the tenors o f the solo chant. Since this music was intended for daily, practical use, and represents not a theoretical or pedagogical codification but a vital, e v o l v i n g performing t r a d i t i o n , the manuscript sources (W W , and FY often h The present study stems from a group of comparative investigations undertaken by the graduate seminar in historical musicology at UCLA in the spring of 1978. under the direction of Dr. Marie-Louise Martinez-Gollner. Each participant in the seminar traced settings of a particular liturgical melody from its earliest known chant Sources through its polyphonic sellings in the Notre Dame repertoire and subsequent moiel sources. The chants discussed included ludea ft llierusidem (a rcsponsory): Alleluia V. Pcischa Nostrum, and Alleluia % . Dies. Virgo Dei Genitrix (both graduals); and Benedicamus Domino I (a chant sung responsorially at the end of certain offices).
