• W2772120410 abstract "Cognitive maps can be built using only informationabout the relative positions of locally visible landmarks.We describe a system that can compute paths betweenany two locations, irrespective of whether they sharecommon visible landmarks, without using 'compass'senses or dead reckoning abilities. This is achieved byencoding the position of each landmark in thebarycentric co-ordinate frames defined by groups ofneighbouring cues. Paths between distant points arecomputed by calculating, using these frames, thepositions relative to the agent of landmarks further andfurther away from the immediate scene. Once therelative positions of landmarks local to the goal areknown a vector giving its position in the agent'segocentric frame can be found. This implicit mapallows the agent to compute the overall distance anddirection to distant targets; find and follow paths to goallocations; generate explicitly the layout of the wholeenvironment relative to its own position; anddiscriminate between perceptually similar landmarks.The system is robust to noise, its calculations requireonly linear mathematics, and its memory requirementsare proportional to the total number of landmarks." @default.
