- W2772574651 abstract "INTRODUCTIONThe authors are from a state university in the American Southwest. The institution has experienced strong enrollment growth for almost a decade. With that growth, the business college is currently experiencing the highest percentage growth of any college on campus. As a result, our accounting enrollments also continue to increase. Anecdotal evidence for the growth points to a poor national economy, overcrowding of California institutions, and success in student placement for our accounting majors. Our accounting faculty have long discussed how to increase the quality of students in the major. With an open enrollment policy for the institution coupled with enrollment increases, this continues to be problematic. Our two principles of accounting courses are designed for all students. Most are business majors, but a significant number are from other disciplines across campus. Less than 10 percent of these students become accounting majors. The Intermediate Accounting I class with its consequent workload and rigor take many students by surprise. As a result, this course has developed a reputation for being a weed out course. Indeed, the rate of letter grades of D, F, and late course withdrawals W (D/F/W), historically stood at over 24 percent. In addition, success in this course is critical. It is the first in a series of three sequential financial accounting courses required for all accounting majors. The subsequent courses all build on the foundations laid in Intermediate Accounting I.Previous efforts to increase student quality in upper division accounting included:* New major orientation-designed to help students maneuver through their courses as well as alerting them to the rigors of the major.* Letter grade of C or better in both principles courses.* Interaction with our Professional Advisory Council-educating students to the opportunities for good quality graduates [Amer, Bain, and Wilburn, 2010].Although being better informed about the major, these efforts did little to increase the student quality in the classroom. Nor did they reduce the D/F/W rate. The D/F/W rate became more problematic in around 2011.As Chairman of the University Curriculum Committee, one of the authors has had the opportunity to be on the forefront of university curricular issues. Recently a potential major change was brought to the attention of curricular leaders. The Board of Regents was strongly considering a change in funding methodology to the University. This change would be tied to graduation rates, timely student progression through the curriculum, and reduction in D/F/W rates in courses. Any courses with over 20 percent D/F/W rates were targeted for improvement. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the efficacy of a skills assessment exam to better determine the preparedness of students for the first course in the upper division, Intermediate Accounting I.In 2009-2010 this potential change by the Board of Regents provided the impetus for faculty in the accounting area of the business college to develop a long desired curricular change. This change was the development of a skills assessment test, designed to ensure that students possessed adequate skills to be successful in the first upper division intermediate accounting course. The test covered basic subject matter from the Principles of Financial course and basic math required of all students to be business majors. It was designed to be basic and broad enough for transfer students to also succeed. Failure to pass the skills assessment test would prohibit a student from enrolling in any upper division accounting courses.Preliminary data shows encouraging results. Students with poorer skill sets are not enrolled in the upper division intermediate accounting course. These students have been more appropriately matched with coursework to pursue a major in areas that better match their skills and desired life goals. …" @default.
