- W2772788081 abstract "We examine the role that end-tethering, grafting density (σ), chemistry of polymer side chain, and solvent type play during vapor swelling of hydrophilic polymer brushes and spuncast films derived from poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA). The distribution of water inside of a PDMAEMA brush at different relative humidities is analyzed using neutron reflectivity, revealing a heterogeneous distribution along the brush profile. We further determine the extent of vapor swelling and solvent uptake at different vapor pressures of water, methanol, and ethanol using spectroscopic ellipsometry. We find that end-tethering of the polymer brushes leads to greater swelling and vapor uptake than the spuncast films. Furthermore, vapor swelling of polymer brushes strongly depends on the interplay of polymer and solvent chemistry. Finally, σ affects vapor sorption in a way that depends on polymer side chain chemistry, indicating an interdependence of the observed parameters on each other." @default.
