- W2773006910 abstract "Mobile computing plays an increasingly important role in today's techno-centric society. As the popularity of mobile computing grows, the associated protocols and their scalability are subject to much closer scrutiny. Mobile IP is currently the most widely accepted mobility protocol, providing mobile nodes the ability to establish communication as they move from their home network. Mobile IP relies heavily on the use of IP to IP tunneling, requiring twenty bytes of overhead for every packet routed to or from a mobile node, assuming reverse tunneling is enabled. The goal of this research was to eliminate the overhead by replacing tunneling with Network Address Port Translation (NAPT) to create a new mobility protocol, Enhanced Mobile IP (EMIP). A basic and a performance enhanced version of the protocol was developed theoretically. Both versions were implemented, and benchmarks were used to compare their performance against Mobile IP. Enhanced Mobile IP (EMIP) replaced the 20-byte per packet overhead of Mobile IP with a 92-byte overhead per communication session. The percentage of overhead with EMIP approached zero as the number of packets exchanged increased, while the percentage of overhead with Mobile IP remained constant. Once three or more round trip packets were exchanged, the overhead of EMIP was less than Mobile IP, and when 1,000 round trip packets were exchanged, EMIP resulted in a bandwidth savings of almost 40,000 bytes. EMIP drastically reduced the bandwidth required by the mobility protocol when compared to Mobile IP, producing a more scalable solution. To achieve this savings, EMIP introduced a one-time delay in session startup ranging from 160 to 260 milliseconds when compared to Mobile IP. This delay could be reduced with improvements to the implementation, but it does not significantly impact the scalability or overall performance of the protocol. The EMIP implementation consumes an additional 36 bytes of memory per mobile node on both the home agent and the foreign agent. However, the current routers can support this increase without requiring the purchase of new equipment. Therefore, the decrease in bandwidth consumed by the overhead of EMIP greatly outweighs the one-time delay and additional memory required." @default.
