- W2773117544 abstract "Buhl, Hendrik. Tatort. Gesellschaftspolitische Themen in der Krimireihe. Constance: UVk, 2013. 358 pp. euro34 (paperback). In the monograph, Tatort. Gesellschaftspolitische Themen in der Krimireihe, Hendrik Buhl offers a comprehensive analysis of sociopolitical aspects in Germany's longest-running crime television series Tatort. Based on Buhl's 2012 dissertation, the book contains analyses of all 34 Tatort episodes aired in 2009. Buhl chooses a methodological approach from the perspective of Cultural/Media studies. rather than addressing previously unanalyzed aspects of Tatort, Buhl describes the sociopolitical aspects in the crime series. therefore, his approach is less theoretical than empirical and quantitative. After a short preface, chapter 1 consists of an introduction to the book's content, structure, cognitive interest (erkenntnisinteresse), and the central questions to be addressed in the filmic analyses. Chapter 2 introduces the Tatort television crime series to the reader and contextualizes it with respect to the federal structure of Germany's first public television station arD and its mission statement. Chapter 3 forms the theoretical basis for Buhl's analysis and reviews cultural and political theories such as louis althusser's ideology and ideological state apparatuses and andreas Dorner's differentiation of Politainment levels. Chapter 4 is purely methodological, including discussions of hermeneutics, interdiscursiveness, and theoretical sampling. a special focus in Buhl's work lies on two topics that recur in several 2009 episodes: unions and work, and alcoholism. these topics are addressed, analyzed, and contextualized extensively in chapter 5. following these longer discussions, chapter 6 contains shorter analyses divided into thematic groups, followed by a conclusion in chapter seven, and a filmography and bibliography.Buhl's writing is concise, the language is highly academic, and the analyses- especially the longer ones-facilitate a deep insight into Germany's most popular crime series and its sociopolitical implications. at the same time, the book's most significant shortcoming lies precisely in its language and structure. for instance, the theoretical chapter is isolated from the book's context and primary goal. it is extremely dense, and for someone who has not read althusser, Gramsci, fiske, and Dorner (the theorists covered in this chapter) it can be quite difficult to comprehend, despite Buhl's concise synopses of their work. likewise, the methodological chapter, still a component in German scholarly writing, is clearly written, yet the points made and questions asked here seem disconnected from the overarching argument and main themes of the book. Both chapters would be more effective and comprehensible if placed within the analytical section. The biggest problem from an american readership's perspective, however, is the structure of the individual chapters, especially the analytical ones. as is German convention, Buhl uses a multilevel list to divide the book's chapters into subchapters and subsections of subchapters, to the extent that chapter five, for instance, not only consists of five subchapters but subchapter 5.3. itself contains subsections 5.3.1 through 5.3.11. this division into extremely small increments severely affects the book's readability and the overall flow of the argument. The analytical chapters of the book (chapters 5 and 6) vary in complexity and length. Chapter 6 consists of a sequence of eighteen analyses, some as short as one or two pages, which can make the argument hard to follow. Buhl organizes the chapter thematically into four subchapters, the first three of which contain analyses of three episodes each. …" @default.
