- W277342893 abstract "Two salient features of the mature neuromuscular junction are the juxtaposition of pre-synaptic release sites with post-synaptic concentrations of acetylcholine receptors (AChR) and the increased stability of junctional AChR. It has been found that a factor produced specifically by neuronal cells increases the state of aggregation of AChR on cultured embryonic muscle cells. It has been proposed that during synaptogenesis, local concentrations of this factor at the developing neurite induce a local aggregation of muscle cell AChR. The factor is found in medium conditioned by neuronal cells and in the cytoplasmic fraction of embryonic tissue. Medium conditioned by neuronal cells also stabilizes the AChR in the membranes of cultured myotubes as shown by decreased rates of detergent extraction of AChR. This indicates that a factor produced by neurons promotes the attachment of AChR to the myotube cytoskeleton. This chapter presents preliminary data indicating that a factor produced by neurons slows the rate at which cultured myotubes degrade AChR and increases the rate at which new AChR is inserted into the myotube membrane. The net effect of the neuronal modulation of these two parameters of myotube AChR metabolism is an increase in the concentration of AChR in the myotube plasma membrane." @default.
