- W2773651808 abstract "When engaged in performing action in concert with another, we are slower responding to targets that appear at locations to which our co-actor has previously responded, referred to as between-person IOR (bIOR). This may be because we represent our human co-actor’s action, predict its end-location, and then inhibit the end-location, leading to bIOR (action representation account). Or, our co-actor’s action may cue our attention to the target location which we then inhibit, leading to bIOR (attention-centred attention account). My thesis aimed to disambiguate these two accounts. The action representation account predicts that bIOR should only emerge when performing with a human co-actor. By contrast, the action-centred attention account posits that bIOR should emerge when performing with any co-actor that cues visual attention to target locations. This account also predicts that facilitation and inhibition should express in the kinematics of responses to targets. In my study, participants observed dot and human co-actors move to the left or right side of a monitor, to the location of a forthcoming target that was then reached to. I manipulated the temporal interval between co-actor movement onset and target onset (SOA; 100ms, 300ms, 600ms, and 1000ms) to observe facilitation and inhibition effects on participants’ RTs and the angles of their reaches. A pattern of trending results consistent with an action-centred account of bIOR was found. In both co-actor conditions, there was facilitation at 300ms SOA and trends towards bIOR at 600ms and 1000ms SOAs. There was facilitation for reaches to left-side targets at 300ms SOA, and trends towards facilitation for reaches to right-side targets at 300ms SOA and inhibition for reaches to left-side targets at 600ms SOA. These findings imply that action-centred attention drives bIOR. I will discuss findings in the context of the opposing accounts, and paradigm features such as the SOA timecourse and the possible representation of the dot co-actor as human." @default.
