- W2773734886 abstract "It has been argued that the rapid aging of the world’s population poses problems for employers across a variety of sectors. Stereotype threat (the belief that one is being reduced to expectations of a group which one is a part of) has been shown to impact on older employees’ job satisfaction and intentions to quit. The primary aim of the current research was to investigate one possible explanation for the finding that stereotype threat is particularly problematic for older employees. It was predicted that older employees would be more age salient, and that age and age salience would each moderate the effect of stereotype threat on three work-related outcomes. Six weekly surveys were e-mailed to participants, in order to investigate whether weekly experiences of stereotype threat would lead to lowered job satisfaction, job disengagement and greater intentions to quit. The major hypotheses were not supported by hierarchical linear modelling analyses, however more general stereotype threat (measured at the start of the study) was associated with weekly stereotyping events, as well as the three outcome variables. This lends support to the use of a weekly measure in future research. Interestingly, it was found that those who were more age salient were more likely to report experiences when they were judged negatively on the basis of their age. This suggests that age salience should not be viewed as a moderator of the effects of stereotype threat, but rather as a precursor to stereotype threat itself. This study highlights the need to closely consider an employee’s particular context, which may contribute to a more nuanced perspective on the effects of stereotype threat events." @default.
