- W2773757822 abstract "Introduction: Inflammation in peripheral airways is a major characteristic of COPD. Acinar nitric oxide (NO) can be used to monitor airway inflammation in COPD. Aim: To measure acinar and bronchial NO in COPD. Methods: Exhaled NO concentration was measured in patients with stable COPD (n=11, 61±8 yrs /mean±SD/, FEV 1 %pred: 40±16), exacerbated COPD (n=13, 61±8 yrs, FEV 1 %pred: 68±20) at hospital admission and discharge, smoking controls (n=6, 51±7yrs, FEV 1 %pred: 93±11) at multiple exhalation flows (100, 150, 200, 250 ml/s) using NOA280i. Acinar NO concentration (CA NO ) and maximal bronchial NO flux (J’aw NO ) were calculated with the linear model, and analysed with non-parametric tests (median /interquartile range/). Results: CA NO was elevated in stable COPD compared to controls (3.68 /2.46-10.34/ vs. 1.55 /0.98-1.85/ ppb, p NO was higher at exacerbation than at stable condition (1.20 /0.73-2.15/ vs. 0.23 /0.14-1.56/ nl/s, p NO showed a negative correlation to lung diffusion capacity (r=-0.55, p NO directly correlated to airway resistance (r=0.38, p Conclusion: Acinar but not bronchial NO might reflect peripheral airways inflammation in COPD. Heightened oxidative stress and the rapid conversion of increased NO in small airways can mask anticipated changes in acinar NO at COPD exacerbation." @default.
