- W2777168152 abstract "Production areas of Khao Kawk Mali 105 (KDML 105) and RD15 rice were characterized by utilizing data on planted, harvested areas, productions and average yields of both rice varieties complied by the Center of Agricultural Information, Office of Agricultural Economics during crop years 1993/94 to 1995/96. Based on their productivity, the cultivated areas were classified into 3 categories i.e. most favorable, favorable and less favorable and less favorable. From 3-year data, the average total KDML 105 cultivated area, approximately 2,178,688 ha was classified into 50,701, 1,065,275 and 606,399 ha of most favorable, favorable and less favorable with the average yields 2,6442,225 and 1,875 kg/ha, respectively, while the national average yield was 2,250 kg/ha. Most of KDML 105 rice area was found in the lower northeast and the total area accounted to 1,600,582 ha classifying as 415,732 ha most favorable, 823,889 ha favorable and 361,004 less favorable with respective average yields 1,969,1,675 and 1,556 kg/ha. For RD15 rice, the average total planted area was 274,806 ha. The total RD15 rice area was characterized by its productivity to 106,914 ha most favorable93,510 ha favorable and 73,967 ha less favorable with 2,7501,962 and 1,675 kg/ha average yields, respectively, as the country average was 2,050 kg/ha. Similar to KDML 105, most of the area, 153,723 ha, found in the lower Northeast. Study on rice grain quality by growing KDML 105 rice in pots containing soil samples collected from farmers fields in all regions, analyses of brown rice grains for their physico-chemical properties, with emphasis on the aroma in grains, indicated no difference among the grain samples, Even though, the rice plants grown in different soils showed apparently difference in height, tillering ability, grain sterility and pot yield. Statistical analyses of the association between aroma in grains with soil fertility properties, micro-and essential elements in soil indicated the high number of aromatic brown rice grains associated with K, Ca, Mg and pH of soil in the Northeast. Assessment of the information on the characteristics of cultivated areas and farmers practices indicated that KDML 105 and RD15 planted areas were generally high terrace fields than low lying ones, with soil texture, mostly, sanday loam, except the clay soil in the Central Plain. Most of the areas was under rainfed and the size of holding area was less than 1.6 ha. Khao Kawk Mali 105 and RD15 growers generally followed the same cultural practices of other rice growers. Transplanting and dry seed broadcasting were common planting methods. The chemical fertilizers were widely used even some farmers using the organic fertilizers. Rice pests were control whenever necessary." @default.
