- W2777179904 abstract "The frugivory characteristics of the Japanese marten (Martes melampus) based on current literature were reviewed. Across the nine study areas (28 studies) in the Japanese archipelago, a total of 140 (112 woody and 28 herbaceous) different fruit species (berries and seeds) were recorded as marten food, 121 (97 woody and 24 herbaceous species) of which were identified to species level. The foraged fruit species were summarised with variations in functional traits (plant form, fruit size, colour, and fruiting habitat). The number of consumed species was significantly greater for small-sized fruits (≤10 mm in diameter or length) than for larger fruits (>10 mm). There was no significant difference in the number of the foraged species between fruiting habitat types. Notably, Actinidia spp. was consumed by the marten in most of the study areas across their range. The review suggests the potential of the Japanese marten as a seed disperser for many species of both woody and herbaceous plants. The compiled frugivory data base can be useful for further quantitative studies of fruit consumption by the Japanese marten with relation to those fruit functional traits." @default.
