- W2778600637 abstract "In the Maxico Earthquake of September 19, 1985, many reinforced concrete (RC) buildings of medium height in Mexico City were severely damaged. The Architectural Institute of Japan (AIJ) and the Japan International cooperation Agency (JICA) groups measured the concrete strength of 30 damaged RC buildings in Mexico City using the Schmidt hammer test and the concrete core test. This paper is a report on the results of the concrete strength measurements made by both groups. On the following conclusion, 1) to 4) were drawn from the Schmidt hammer test results and 5) was drawn from the concrete core test. 1) The concrete strengths of the 30 buildings measured ranged from 128 to 290 kg/cm^2, with an average of 201 kg/cm2. The distribution was similar to regular distribution. Only 1.9% of the total of measurement points showed a concrete strength lower than the minimum AIJ RC Standards value. 2) A tendency for destroyed or severely damaged buildings to have a particularly low concrete strength could not be recognized. A specific relation between the damage rank of the building and concrete strength could not be seen. 3) A tendency for the concrete strength of damaged columns to be lower than undamaged columns could not be seen. 4) No large difference could be seen between the concrete strength of upper floors and that of lower floors. Neither could a large difference be seen between different locations (columns, beams, slabs, etc. ) on the same floor. This is believed to show that there was no difference in the precision of concrete placement in Mexico City between upper and lower floors. 5) Concrete strength values obtained using the concrete core test were larger than those obtained using the Schmidt hammer test.
