- W2779419012 abstract "This paper, in light of Russo- Serbian historical and cultural ties, discusses the relationship of Leo Tolstoy towards the open 'Serbian question' in two events of his time, both important for the history of the Serbian people. First, it deals with the transpositions of historical material in the motifs of the novel Ana Karenina: (a) the views of the Russian public in relation to the 'Serbian question' before the Serbo-Turkish war in 1876; and (b) the departure of volunteers and Count Vronsky to the war in Serbia after the tragic fate of Ana Karenina. Secondly, the paper examines the correspondence between Anđa M. Petrović and Leo Tolstoy about the fate of Serbs during the annexation crisis in Bosnia and Herzegovina (1908), which was an inspiration for the writing of his study 'On the Annexation of Bosnia and Herzegovina to Austria'. By doing this, Tolstoy, the apostle of the oppressed, who was already rejected by the church, and in disagreement with his family and society, both celebrated and disputed, showed his consistency and righteousness: (a) he supported the Serbs, the 'small' oppressed people in search for freedom and independence and (b) he was ready to listen to a young girl from Ser-bia, whom he did not forget even in the most difficult moments of his life." @default.
