- W2780964843 abstract "Systemic inflammation and hypoxia in COPD contribute to the development of atherosclerosis. OSA also causes hypoxia. It is logical to assume that the severity of OSA will affect the severity of atherosclerotic changes in the carotid arteries in patients with COPD. The aim was to assess the degree of atherosclerotic changes in carotid arteries in patients with COPD, according to the severity of OSA. The study involved 37 patients with COPD groups B, C, D (GOLD), 24 men and 13 women, mean age M (SD) 58,12 (6,33) years. An ultrasound mapping communis (CCA) and internal (ICA) carotid arteries. Intima-media thickness (IMT) and the percentage of carotid stenosis was determined. OSA was diagnosed by the screening method with the use of Somnocheck-micro. Coronary artery disease was an exclusion criterion. Patients were divided into 3 groups: with mild, moderate and severe OSA, which was determined by the apnea/hypopnea index (AHI). As worsening of OSA an increased thickness of the intima-media complex measured in the CCA was found (M(SD)): 0,52 (0,19) mm in mild OSA, 0.94 (0,15) mm, in moderate OSA, 1,08 (0,11) mm in severe OSA. The severity of stenosis of ICA also increased (M (SD)): 16,33 (6,58)% in gr.I; 25,87 (3,00)% in gr.II, 39,67 (6,84)% in group 3 (p OSA is the cause of atherosclerotic lesions of the carotid arteries in patients with COPD. The severity of atherosclerotic changes depends on the severity of OSA." @default.
