- W2783094722 abstract "Crossing fords : the example of the river Saône. An historical and archeological approach. Based on the example of the river Saône, this article presents the recently acquired knowledge of a particular means of river crossing rivers, the ford. First of all, a ford is a natural shallow upon which the depth is very shallow, except during periods of flooding. Concerning the recent historical periods, two written sources, the military archives and the archives of the Roads and Bridges department, were used in order to establish an inventory of these crossing places. Différent evidences, such as toponyms and ancient access paths, found on ancient topographical maps also allowed the fords to be localized. The presence on the bank of archaeological sites, such as Roman necropoles or médiéval mottes could also confirm the existence of ancient crossing places. Several subaquatic excavations of fords were carried out and allowed a better interpretation of the presence of many objects in the beds of rivers. If some artefacts certainly resuit from the dépôt of offerings, other can be related to various types of sites, such as Bronze age habitats setded upon shallows, watermills, fishing grounds and port installations. The richness of this héritage, facing nowadays a risk of destruction, shows that men always lived in harmony with the river, exploiting its resourceful environment and frequendy crossing its waters which never represented an impassable frontier." @default.
