- W2783270402 abstract "The pathogcnesis of: onchocercal chorioretinopathy is poorly understood, hz th/~ ariicle, Philip Cooper, Rtmald G,derian, Roberto Proaf~o :tnd David Taylor discuss the important clinical, histological and ephtemiological features of the re- suiting lesions that cause blindness, and revi~v the n umer- ous mechanisms that have been put forward to explain its pathogenesis. The patlukgenesis of anterior segment disease, l~lrticulan! sclerosin~ keratitis, has bee~ reviewed in depth previously.'/~ and will ~ot l,e discussed here. In the Developing World, onchocerciasis is an impor- tant disease. It is a filarial disease of humans caused by Onchocerca volwdus, which is transmitted by black- flies of the genus Simulium. The infection is endemic in equatori.'al Africa, the Yemen, and Central and South America. Over 18 million people are estimated to be infected, worldwide, of which approximately 350 000 are blind, and a similar number suffer severe visual lOSS 2. Blinding lesions ma.y affect ocular structures in both ti:e an:erior (c~.rnea and iris) and posterior (reiina, choroid, optic newe) segments and include sclerosing keratitis, iri.docyclitis, optic atrophy and r!;orioretinal disease (~llso referred to as chorioretin- opathy or chorioretinids). Posterior segment lesions, particularly chorioret!:~opathy, account for much of the visual loss seen in this disease 3,4. Clinical pattern" @default.
