- W2783304174 abstract "Paterson and its French people. An American stage on the silk road. In the second half of the 19th century, the town of Paterson (New Jersey) became the focus of silk manufacture in the U.S.A. People of that time were to give it the title of Lyon of America. That period was marked by the plantation of European industrialists and by the coming of a manpower originating from silk — or at least — textile manufacturing centres of Europe as it was then, and particularly of Lyon. Face to the other national communities, the French community was of little importance. The origin of the first wave of French migrants — those who can be taken into account in the 1870 census — seems to resort to the qualification of silk fabric chemical dyer. These migrants therefore represented, technically speaking, the future of Lyon. Whereas the Italians from Biella or the Englishmen from Coventry were compelled to emigrate because their social and occupational status was contested, owing to the evolution of the techniques in their home countries, these inhabitants of Lyon seemed to be urged to cross the Atlantic by quite a different motivation." @default.
