This double-blind, placebo-controlled phase 3 clinical trial showed that a 3 month course of varenicline combined with smoking cessation counselling was associated with a significantly higher proportion of participants who were biochemically confirmed as abstinent at 48 weeks compared with placebo and counselling (18 [15%, 95% CI 8–21] of 123 patients in the varenicline group vs eight [6%, 95% CI 2–11] of 124 patients in the placebo group; p=0·036).
