- W2783994509 abstract "Karyotypes of the parthenogenetic Cnemidophorus laredoensis and its presumed parental species Cnemidophorus gularis and Cnemidophorus sexlineatus are presented and compared. Cnemidophorus laredoensis is a diploid species (2n = 46) with a typical sexlineatus species group karyotype but with two pairs of heteromorphic chromosomes. C-bands of C. laredoensis show that constitutive heterochromatin is mostly confined to centromeric regions. The karyotypic data are consistent with the hypothesis that C. gularis and C. sexlineatus are the parental species of C. laredoensis. McKINNEY et al. (1973), in describing a new all-female lizard species, Cnemidophorus laredoensis, hypothesized that this species was diploid and probably arose as a result of hybridization between two extant species, Cnemidophorus gularis and Cnemidophorus sexlineatus. The species was hypothesized to be diploid on the basis of the observed elec. trophoretic pattern of the enzyme isocitrate dehydrogenase. Neaves and Gerald (1968, 1969) had demonstrated that the electrophoretic pattern for the IDH-1 locus in bisexual, diploid Cnemidophorus consists of a single band for homozygotes and three bands for heterozygotes. The normal dimer three banded heterozygote pattern consisted of a dark middle and lighter upper and lower bands. The heterozygote pattern in unisexual triploid Cnemidophorus consists of two dark bands and one lighter band. The lighter band would be either the upper or lower band depending on which allele was present in only a single dose. McKinney et al. (1973) observed the normal diploid heterozygous electrophoretic pattern for the IDH-1 locus in C. laredoensis. However, the karyotype of C. laredoensis has not been reported. In order to determine its origin, McKinney et al. (1973) compared morphologically and biochemically a sample of C. laredoensis to samples of Cnemidophorus septemvittatus, C. gularis, and C. sexlineatus. Among all species of Cnemidophorus these three species superficially are the most similar and are geographically closest to C. laredoensis. Their comparisons indicated that C. gularis and C. sexlineatus are most similar to C. laredoensis. They then hypothesized that these were the species that hybridized to produce C. laredoensis. The purposes of this study were (1) to test the hypothesis that C. laredoensis is diploid and, (2) to determine whether karyotypic data are useful to test the hypothesis that C. gularis and C. sexlineatus are the probable parental species of C." @default.
