- W2785116003 abstract "Pain is a complex multidimensional experience influenced by numerous factors, which may function in either an adaptive or maladaptive capacity in terms of their effect on the experience of pain. Research has shown that cognitive content, cognitive process, behaviour and emotion and crucial factors influencing the perception of pain. Following Jensen’s revised model, this study had two primary aims: to examine the bidirectional relationships between cognitive content (threat and challenge appraisals), cognitive processes (rumination, absorption, distraction, acceptance, non-judgment, dissociation, reappraisal, enhancement, and suppression), behaviour (sleep disturbance), emotion (depression, anxiety and anger) and pain-related outcomes; and to determine the unique, individual influence of each of these factors in predicting pain-related outcomes. These aims were assessed in the context of an experimental pain paradigm involving a cold pressor test. A battery of self-report measures was used to assess the independent variables, while pain outcomes in relation to the cold pressor test were assessed in terms of pain tolerance, intensity and unpleasantness. As predicted, most maladaptive and adaptive independent variables, respectively, were significantly associated with each other. However, contrary to predictions, only challenge appraisals, rumination, acceptance and non-judgment were significantly correlated with painrelated outcomes. As hypothesised, rumination uniquely predicted pain intensity in a hierarchical regression model, when controlling for baseline covariates. However, contrary to predictions, no other independent variables significantly influenced pain perception. The current findings highlight the importance of rumination in the perception of pain intensity. This suggests rumination is a crucial measure to include in pre-treatment interviews so individuals with high levels of baseline rumination may be matched to an appropriate treatment in order to address their rumination, thus decreasing their perceived pain intensity." @default.
