- W2785890365 abstract "The President’s Award for best scientific paper is presented to esteemed members at each Southern Thoracic Surgical Association annual meeting to stimulate friendly scientific competition. Between 1964 and 2015, 58 awards were presented for clinical expertise in general thoracic surgery (18), adult cardiac surgery (25), and congenital heart surgery (15). Manuscripts were published by The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, and the average number of subsequent citations in professional medical journals as a measure of scientific importance was 43.7 ± 60.2. A seemingly prosaic addition of a yearly scientific award has had an enormous impact on the scientific community and membership participation. A seemingly prosaic addition of a yearly scientific award has had an enormous impact on the scientific community and membership participation. The Southern Thoracic Surgical Association (STSA) has had a long and storied tradition of sentinel scientific contributions, heartfelt camaraderie, and lasting family ties. In 1964, the President’s Award for best scientific paper was inaugurated by President Lewis Bosher to stimulate friendly scientific competition to urge members to present their most important clinical findings at STSA meetings [1Glass B.A. Geer J.C. The name was changed to Clifford Van Meter President’s Award in 2008 in his memory. In 2013, the President’s Award was expanded to honor esteemed members for presentations in general thoracic surgery (Carolyn Reed), adult heart surgery (Clifford Van Meter), and congenital heart surgery (George Daicoff). In 2003, Hal Urschel [55Urschel H.C. Historical origin of the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association.Ann Thorac Surg. 2003; 76: 2-10Abstract Full Text Full Text PDF Scopus (1) Google Scholar] noted that the President’s Award “is another unique aspect of the STSA, given to the best paper as determined by the President aided by an advisory committee who participate in the selection process.” He further stated that “it was established…through a grant from Smith, Kline, and French and is the Association’s highest honor” [55Urschel H.C. Historical origin of the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association.Ann Thorac Surg. 2003; 76: 2-10Abstract Full Text Full Text PDF Scopus (1) Google Scholar]. The only person winning it twice is US Senator Bill Frist (senator from 1995 to 2007; majority leader from 2003 to 2007) [55Urschel H.C. Historical origin of the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association.Ann Thorac Surg. 2003; 76: 2-10Abstract Full Text Full Text PDF Scopus (1) Google Scholar]. Dr Urschel noted that only a select group have received all three of the unique awards, namely: the President’s Award for best scientific paper, the Osler-Abbott Award for discussmanship, and the Tiki Award for most unique slide. The six physicians are Drs Alex Haller, Jr, Hal Urschel, Francis Robicsek, Constantine Mavroudis, Ross Ungerleider, and Robert Cerfolio. The purpose of this historical review is to highlight the scientific contributions that were made by the awardees and to measure the impact of their contributions. The list of awardees was tabulated and correlated with year of award, recipient age at presentation, topic of presentation (general thoracic surgery, adult heart surgery, and congenital heart surgery), title of manuscript, and subsequent literature citations. Evidence of continued contributions and leadership activities were assessed by subsequent Tiki and Osler-Abbott Awards as well as election to President. These selection criteria were made on the basis of historical precedent and did not include other awards that were introduced in later years. Between 1964 and 2015, 58 awards were bestowed on 57 presenters (Table 1) [1Glass B.A. Geer J.C. Albert H.M.
