- W2785954920 abstract "Edited by Rosanna W. Peeling and Frederick P. Sparling, 244 pp, with illus, $79.50, Totowa, NJ, Humana Press, 1999.Sexually Transmitted Diseases: Methods and Protocols is part of a series of textbooks devoted to methods in molecular medicine. The 244-page text is divided into 14 chapters, which present an overview of molecular technology, techniques to detect 9 different sexually transmitted pathogens, and a section covering research techniques for genotyping and other epidemiologic techniques. The topics and methods selected are current and have clinical utility. The person who reads this book chooses to do so for a very specific purpose. The book is not one to just sit down and read cover to cover. The book is written in “cookbook” format of how to perform each step of the procedure. The chapters are divided into sections: an introduction, materials, equipment and supplies, methods, discussion, notes, and references. When several commercial options are available, the buffers, enzyme mix, and instruments are described for each system. This gets a bit confusing, since the materials are listed for all methods collectively, rather than describing the supplies, equipment, and protocol for each method separately.A strength of this book is the notes section at the end of each chapter describing pitfalls and limitations of the procedure. These are very helpful insights to adapting the technique into a clinical setting. These pearls of wisdom are worth the price of the book.A concern with any text is how quickly the material will be out of date. In the arena of molecular techniques this is especially true, since it is a fast-paced discipline with constant innovations. However, the basic techniques covered in this textbook serve as a good start for those who are initiating these protocols in their laboratory for the first time. It is a ready reference book for anyone who will be adding more molecular methods to their battery of laboratory tests." @default.
