- W2786927190 abstract "In France approximately 90 patients who are on the liver transplant waiting list, die due to organ shortages. There are several answers to this problem: improving the effectiveness of the organ harvesting network, developing new surgical methods and upgrading liver support devices. There are today many means available (ex vivo liver perfusion, bioartificial livers, liver cell transplantation, MARS (Molecular Adsorbents Recirculating System), but their efficiency is still a matter of debate. Nevertheless, two of these devices (HepatAssist, MARS.) seem of interest, particularly when they are used as a bridge to transplantation. Progress in cell bioengineering will allow us to use human hepatocytes in bioartificial livers, thus enabling us to overcome problems related to the use of xenogenic liver cells. © 2004 Societe de reanimation de langue francaise.
