- W2788703330 abstract "This study consists of a qualitative analysis of radiointerviews with 26 American authors conducted by Naomi Epel,a California dream researcher. Epel's interviews are asubstantial contribution to anecdotal literature concerningconnections between dreams and creative writing. Her sampleis biased, having been selected on the basis of personalpreferences, but highly professional. The authors are widelypublished. The sample is diverse in terms of genre and, tosome extent, ethnicity. The data are readily available(Epel, 1993).The purpose of this dissertation was to analyze Epel'sdata in a rigorous and systematic way that would add toknowledge about the functions of dreams for creativewriters; the process by which writers transform their dreamsinto creative products; and influences of the creativeprocess on dreams. The data were analyzed using a modified grounded theorymethod based on the work of Glaser and Strauss (Glaser,1978; Glaser, 1992; Glaser & Strauss, 1967). Open coding wasused in combination with research memos. The researchmethodology chosen and its implementation through acomputerized database program developed by Marie-AnneDemuynck permitted the systematic organization of this bodyof anecdotal literature into an outline of dream functions, transformation, and influence. It was found that dreams provided starting points forcreative work and that dream reports were incorporated increative works. Visual imagery and primary process materialpredominated in these two groups. Dreams provided authorswith new experiences and with solutions to creativeproblems. Dreams helped authors resolve ambivalence and setpriorities. Writers treat dreams as just one of many sourcesof material and work with dreams by accessing feelings andsensations. They transform dreams into creative products byreproducing dreams literally and by fictionalizing theircontent. Authors dream about creative material and attributedreams to anxiety around the creative process. The studyfindings support the call of researchers for additionalresearch into specific fields of artistic endeavor, primaryprocess and creativity, and home (non-sleep-laboratory)dreams." @default.
