We are of course deeply gratified that Circulation is recognizing the unique contributions that Dr Ray Lipicky has made to the art and science of drug development. Our pleasure, however, is tempered with sadness because Dr Lipicky tragically passed away shortly after conducting this interview. The article provides a rare perspective into a person known for his talent and insight, as well as his humility. Dr Lipicky had a deep appreciation for the complexities of cardiovascular and renal drug development, as well as the unexpected and surprising results that can emerge in this field, such as increased mortality from effective anti-arrhythmics (CAST [Cardiac Arrhythmia Suppression Trial]) and effective treatments of heart failure (eg, milrinone). He was persistent in raising fundamental questions about logic that often exposed the shaky foundations of many research protocol designs and the interpretation of the results from such studies. He was not shy about expressing his opinion, but by doing so in the form of questioning, he was able to confront people’s basic beliefs without seeming haughty or egotistical. His use of the Socratic Method when conducting US Food and Drug Administration Cardiorenal Advisory Committee meetings was legendary. For those lucky enough to witness them, these meetings were considered to be the epitome of clinical science education. Although Ray’s deepest loves were his wife and his squid axon laboratory, his commitment to public health, the development of effective therapies, and the well-being of colleagues and the many patients he affected always shone through. This in-depth interview with 1 of the great talents of clinical research will serve as an enduring record of a remarkable career and will be treasured by all who knew him.Footnoteshttp://circ.ahajournals.org Previous Back to top Next FiguresReferencesRelatedDetails March 27, 2018Vol 137, Issue 13 Advertisement Article InformationMetrics © 2018 American Heart Association, Inc.https://doi.org/10.1161/CIRCULATIONAHA.118.034595PMID: 29581359 Originally publishedMarch 27, 2018 PDF download Advertisement" @default.
