- W2790016657 abstract "Abstract Brine reject can pose a serious environmental threat due to its salinity and also due to containing residues of pretreatment and cleaning chemicals, together with their reaction byproducts. Therefore, an adequate discharge of the brine reject is a key part of the environmental management of desalination plants. In coastal desalination plants, discharge through submarine outfalls is the most common practice. In inland desalination plants, diluting the brine in a water stream is not a feasible option. Direct brine discharge in the soils would lead to its degradation by salinization. Other strategies must be considered, such as impervious evaporation ponds or the irrigation of halophytes. Around the world, systems have been developed aiming the use of the evaporation ponds for fish or algae farming. Cyanobacteria species such Spirulina, and algae species such as C. vulgaris and N. gaditana can be grown in open raceway ponds. These species are a source of proteins, fatty acids, and also lipids from which biodiesel can be obtained. Other schemes that have been assessed consider the growth of fish in the ponds, particularly from the Tilapia genus, together with the irrigation of salt-tolerant forage shrubs. Halophytes from the Atriplex genus have been widely tested due to their ability to tolerate brine reject from brackish desalination plants and to act as fodder for goats. Those schemes have been developed for inland desalination plants located in arid regions, but are valid as well for coastal areas worldwide. This chapter reviews the state of the art of the valorization of desalination wastewater through the production of agricultural and algal biomass and their derived bioproducts. These techniques can succeed in turning an environmental problem (the brine reject disposal) into a source of new economic activities." @default.
