- W2790647403 abstract "Firework related injuries in England have been on the increase, with the majority occurring as a result of privately purchased fireworks. In the current pandemic climate, restrictions prohibiting organised firework displays will almost certainly lead to a higher proportion of retail for home events. At the same time, despite reclassification of firework devices in 2017, fireworks (of both domestic and industrial categories) are widely available through the internet. Misuse factors, including public use of illegal fireworks and substance use, further increase the risk of significant harm. Accordingly, the rate of injury frequency and severity is likely to peak during ‘firework season’ (October- January). Although the majority of firework injuries comprise of thermal and chemical burns, direct contact blast injuries represent a complex subgroup associated with multiple site and higher severity injuries. The four most commonly injured regions (skin, ocular, acoustic and hands), require early identification and multidisciplinary management with appropriate support services. By summarising both the mechanisms and patterns of firework injuries, we present two algorithms for the initial and surgical management of these patients." @default.
