- W2790652298 abstract "The Levellers were not ‘crushed’ in the spring 1649 mutinies; and they actively promoted the Agreement of the People until the Oxford troop disorders of September 1649, in which Leveller ideas played a part. Although the Commonwealth was overcoming the unsettlement of 1647–1649 by then, the government’s unsuccessful treason prosecution of John Lilburne demonstrated the continuing audience for the Leveller agenda. Thereafter, the Leveller leaders accepted the Commonwealth, but Lilburne, John Wildman, and William Walwyn continued to advocate for Leveller goals. The Rump Parliament eventually banished Lilburne on pain of death. His 1653 return to England and second treason trial in the midst of the climacteric produced by Oliver Cromwell’s dissolution of the Rump revived the Leveller programme of accountable government and popular rights." @default.
