- W2790805857 abstract "This chapter explores the internal debates over Islam in Britain. Many British Muslims are engaged in practical reasoning on issues of marriage, gender relations, work, economics, and science in a British social and knowledge context. They see it as important to reason in Islamic ways toward solutions that will work for Muslims in Britain. Also, conservative Muslims are engaged in adapting to Britain from Islamic starting points that also find acceptability in Deoband or Riyadh. The chapter then draws on several disputes among Muslims that involve efforts to find “practical convergences,” whereby different starting points can be retained and some harmonization of practices achieved. Practical convergence allows Muslims and others to preserve what they see as intrinsically valuable evaluative frameworks even as they inflect practices toward a common horizon. As such, practical convergence can offer a better way forward than demanding explicit agreement on contested social issues." @default.
