The program has 150 participants annually and is aimed at suburban and rural youth who apply to and are selected based on their interest in community leadership. Utilising a constructionist approach and interpretivist framework, eight participants were conveniently and purposively sampled to participate in individual semi-structured interviews. Data was transcribed verbatim and examined using thematic analysis. Participants explained that their participation contributed to the empowerment of individual identity, via three main processes. These were: the development of resilient attitudes; the identification of a personal leadership style; and the development of a sense of group belonging. Pre-leadership programs have the potential to enable adolescents to create and explore their own personal and group identity and feel confident and empowered to act authentically. These findings suggest that community based group programs have the potential to meaningfully allow adolescents to acquire and practice pre-leadership and potentially, leadership skills." @default.
