- W2791195908 abstract "There are different approaches for modeling turbulent dispersed multiphase flows. The fundamental approach is the direct numerical simulation (DNS), including the fully resolved or full-scale DNS (FDNS) and the point-particle DNS (PDNS). In FDNS, particles/droplets/bubbles are simulated to occupy finite-size volumes, no models for gas-particle interaction forces are needed and the main task is the numerical methods to deal with the interface, such as the volume-of fluid (VOF), level-set, front-tracking, and immerse-boundary methods, etc. In PDNS, particles/droplets/bubbles are treated as point sources, not occupying finite-size volumes and models for the particle drag force, lift force, and particle mass change (evaporation/devolatilization/combustion) are needed. In the point-particle approaches, beside PDNS, there are large-eddy simulation (LES) and Reynolds-averaged (RANS) modeling. These approaches include Eulerian–Eulerian (E–E, two-fluid) modeling and Eulerian–Lagrangian (E–L) modeling. E–L modeling, when accounting for interparticle collision, is called discrete element modeling (DEM). The PDNS can give instantaneous velocities and detailed turbulence structures, but has too large a computational requirement, and hence it is used for fundamental studies and provides database for validating models in LES and RANS modeling. The FDNS can give the detailed shape of interface and instantaneous velocities inside each phase, but needs a still larger computational requirement and cannot be used to simulate practical dispersed multiphase flows with phase change and combustion. For engineering dispersed multiphase flows only Eulerian–Eulerian and Eulerian–Lagrangian approaches for RANS modeling or LES can be used. The former needs a particle turbulence model and particle stress model, whereas the latter needs a fluid instantaneous velocity model and interparticle collision model." @default.
