Companies spend an average of $40,000 on eachmove. It is in both the transferees, and thecompany’s best interest that these transitions aresuccessful. Besides crossing a physicalboundary when moving, transferees must also crossthe inclusionary boundary at the new work sitebefore they can again become fully functionalemployees. However, research indicates that theorganization cannot grant the employee access tocross this inclusionary boundary. Permission canonly come from the other members in the new workcenter. Research has shown that as much as 70% ofthe knowledge a transferee must acquire in the newwork center is tacit, contextual, informal,unofficial, shared, and emergent only within thatwork center. To move from an organizational outsiderto an organizational insider, the transferee mustsuccessfully develop a set of informational pointsof contact and a set of friends that will providethis information.
