Numerous near-atomic structures have recently been determined of ATPase hexamers bound to substrate peptides. These interactions are mediated by pore-loop tyrosines, which are conserved across AAA ATPases. We explore how ATP binding organizes individual subunits into an active hexamer, and the network or subunit-subunit interactions that enable inter-protomer communication required for substrate translocation. These analyses provide the foundation for future studies into the mechanism of how ATPases perform work on substrates." @default.
