- W2793738654 abstract "Abstract Prolactin (PRL) plays an important role in maintaining bone homeostasis, through both direct and indirect mechanisms. In mild hyperprolactinemia conditions, bone remodeling is further stimulated with bone resorption increasing more than bone formation. When PRL values are very high, bone resorption is further stimulated whereas bone formation is suppressed. Most patients with PRL-secreting adenoma have high-bone turnover osteoporosis and decreased bone mineral density (BMD), especially when disease develops in the first decades of life. Patients with PRL-secreting adenoma may develop vertebral and non-vertebral fractures, even when BMD is only slightly decreased and in absence of hypogonadism, providing convincing evidence that PRL in excess may directly affect bone quality in humans, such as previously demonstrated in experimental animal models." @default.
