The 3-ply clad sheet metals are being utilized in domestic applications, shipbuilding and other industries due to their high tensile strength to weight ratio and corrosion resistance characteristics. The components manufactured after forming operations experience some geometrical changes due to springback. The springback phenomenon during bending of composite 3-ply clad sheet metal is very complex due to combination of different sheet thicknesses and mechanical properties. The present paper deals with experimental determination of springback and its finite element analysis in a U-bending operation. A 3-ply sheet metal consists of three layers of different thicknesses of SS430 and SS304 with AA1050 in the core. It is selected due to its continuously increasing demand in sheet metal forming industries. The 3-ply sheet of thickness 2.5mm is characterized for tensile strength and anisotropy with the help of a universal testing machine (UTM). Tensile properties of individual sheets in the 3-ply sheet are also determined separately using the UTM and are used in the material model in the springback simulations of U-bending of the sheet using ABAQUS software. The experiments on U-bending process are conducted to validate the predicted results obtained by simulations and are found to be in good agreement. The experimentally obtained plot of bending force vs. punch displacement is also found to be following similar trend to that of the predicted results." @default.
