• W2794045078 abstract "Power line is a ubiquitous network and Power Line Communication (PLC) has the potential to provide broadband access to homes and workspaces. It does not need any new wiring or high cost for installation. Although it has the potential to transmit the data over power line, the performance of PLC degrades due to the presence of noise interferences generated by electrical devices connected to the power line. This paper investigates the Bit Error Rate (BER) performance of a power line channel with Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol in the presence of impulsive noise and without the presence of impulsive noise. With the help of a software module for the simulation of PLC network, network simulator-3 (ns-3) model was developed to assess the PLC channel's behaviour in the presence and without the presence of impulsive noise. The effect of varying the noise parameters on the PLC channel's performance was also investigated. The BER further increases on increasing the level of impulsive noise. The main challenge of transmitting data over power line is to reduce BER caused by impulsive noise. Investigations were done and it was found that adaptive filters perform better in mitigating and reducing the effects of impulsive noise over PLC system." @default.
