- W2794232218 abstract "There are many causes of undernutrition in older adults. Between the ages of 40 and 70 years, the average person can expect their energy intake to decrease by approximately 25% as a result of a phenomenon known as the anorexia of ageing. There are many consequences of undernutrition, including higher risk of pressure ulcers, sarcopenia, sarcopenic obesity, increased morbidity and mortality rates and increased healthcare costs. Oral nutrition supplements (ONS) have a beneficial effect on undernourished older adults. They can improve energy and protein intake and increase weight, but their use may not significantly improve mortality rates in some disease states. When possible, it is recommended that when administering medications to older adults at risk of undernutrition, they be given with a energy-dense oral nutrition supplement instead of water as part of a med pass programme." @default.
