- W2794249564 abstract "Reply to Responses to “Thinking About Our Work: When the Therapist Becomes Ill” Alice Byrne1 issn 0362-4021 © 2017 Eastern Group Psychotherapy Society group, Vol. 41, No. 4, Winter 2017 361 1 Private practice, Huntington, NY. Correspondence should be addressed to Alice Byrne, LCSW, FAGPA, 107 Fleet’s Cove Road, Huntington, NY 11743. E-mail: alicebyrne107@verizon.net. I am most pleased and grateful for the six comments on my essay, and for Walter’s good wishes on my survival. The comments were thought provoking and, I hope, opened more reflections on an important topic. This wonderful experience of reading responses to my essay reminded me of the large support group that EGPS is for our members. I often tell my patients that, as on an airplane, their own oxygen masks need to be in place before they can help anyone else. At present, the International Association of Group Psychotherapy has a trauma support Listserv emphasizing the self-care of therapists. I was deeply touched by Scott Rutan’s comment about my loss of independence and sense of self in such an intense crisis—a reminder from Scott of the famous Harry Stack Sullivan statement “We are all more human than otherwise.” I, too, traveled to teach and support in Belfast, and the reference was not lost on me. May I reassure Roberta Omin and Rob Pepper that I am familiar with Ann Steiner and the professional will. The amount of support, concrete and emotional, was enormous with family, friends, and colleagues really helping. My patients know of my sense of humor, which, I hope, helps and does not hinder. Another friend and colleague, Lois Morton, has become a songwriter with a song “I Like to Worry, It Keeps Me Calm.” It may be relevant to us all. I give a special thank-you to Lee Kassan for his excellent and kind editing and for including my poem. I believe in the great relevance of poetry to group therapy. As Walt Whitman famously said, “Every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you.” ..." @default.
