- W2794273359 abstract "Toxins are poisonous substances of either biological or chemical nature that cause injury or death. This chapter discusses only a few of importance to the central nervous system (CNS) among the pediatric population of the vast group of toxic substances in the environment: alcohol, nicotine, substance abuse (including opiates, cocaine, marijuana), lead, and mercury. The primary clinical manifestation of lead toxicity in children is encephalopathy, which may be overt or subclinical. The most common gross abnormalities include microcephaly, agenesis of the corpus callosum, hydrocephalus, cerebellar anomalies and microphthalmia. The microscopic lesions in fetal alcohol syndrome are nonspecific and may be seen in a variety of disorders. Prevention and safety precautions are most important in dealing with these intoxications. Education of women during their reproductive years holds the greatest hope for prevention of fetal alcohol syndrome and avoidance of the adverse effects of smoking and substance abuse." @default.
